The wait is finally over—and a little earlier than expected! With the State Bar releasing the July 2026 California Bar Exam results just before Halloween this year, the waiting period has been cut short once again. The results used to come out just before Thanksgiving!
First and foremost: Congratulations to everyone whose name appears on the Pass List!
If you do see your name on that pass list, take a moment to soak it in. You survived one of the most grueling professional hurdles in the country. All the sacrifices, the long hours, and the stress have finally paid off. Celebrate this massive achievement with your friends and family—you earned it!
If your name was not on the list…
Seeing a failing result is incredibly disappointing. Take a deep breath. It is completely okay to feel bummed out, frustrated, or exhausted right now. Give yourself grace.
However, there is a silver lining to the results dropping a week early this year: you’ll have a whole week of extra time to put towards your goal of becoming a licensed attorney. Here is how you can strategically use this early release to your advantage to help you pass in February:
1. Take a Breather (Seriously)
Before you even think about opening an outline, step away from your desk. You have an extra week, which means you have time to actually process this without immediately jumping back onto the hamster wheel. Go outside, enjoy the fall weather, celebrate Halloween, and do something that genuinely brings you joy. Your brain needs a reset before it can tackle a new study plan.
2. Analyze Where You Struggled
Once you’ve taken a few days to decompress, use this extra time to analyze your score report and figure out where you need to focus your study time in the coming months. Did your essays bring your score down? Did you struggle with the Performance Test? Was it the MBEs? Identifying your areas for improvement now will help you make the most of your study time leading up to the February exam.
3. Leverage the Knowledge Still in Your Brain
Because the results are out earlier, a significant amount of the black-letter law you memorized over the summer is still fresh in your mind. You do not need to start from scratch. You already have a foundation; you just need to learn how to apply it more effectively.
4. Double Down on Active Practice
Use your headstart to change your approach. Don’t waste time passively re-watching lecture videos. Instead, shift immediately to active practice in the specific areas where you struggled. Do timed essays that focus on applying the law, work on your mechanical writing structure. Do more MBEs and learn from each MBE.
Failing the bar exam does not mean you don’t know the law—it usually means there is a flaw in your exam execution. Enjoy a well-deserved breather this week, and when you are ready, use this extra time to work smarter, address your weaknesses, and more fully prepare to slay the beast in February!
